It is almost impossible to use the weapon without bracing yourself somehow, given the force carried by the spring mechanism is enough to drive a wooden bolt clean through an oak tree and embed itself into the one behind it. It doesn't take much stretching of the imagination to wonder how plate armour would stand to it.
